Tony's guide to using technology to build your new CV/Resume.

Introduction

Before I provide my insights on how best to use technology to build your new CV let’s look at some of the tools you can find on the world wide web today.

CV Writing Tools on the Web Today (EXAMPLEs ONLY)

When it comes to looking for a job, having a great CV is crucial. It's the first impression you make on a potential employer, so it's important to get it right. Fortunately, there are many CV writing tools available on the web that can help you create a professional and impressive CV. Here are some of the ones I found:

1. Resume Nerd - AI Resume tool

Resume Nerd does help to build a CV. I really did not see any advanced AI features in this tool that might help you build a professional CV, but it does have other features like job search tools. Not sure how good the Job Search is now, but it may change if more people use this in the future.

It does offer a CV build for an extremely low cost (currently $NZ1.75) to build a professional-looking CV should you be interested in this tool.

2. Novoresume - Not FREE

Novoresume offers a free online CV builder offering various templates and customisation options. With Novoresume, you can create a professional-looking CV in minutes. Novoresume also offers tips and advice on how to write a great CV, so you can be sure that your CV is up to scratch.

When I logged in with my Google Account (You will need to do this with almost every option) and put my level of experience into the input screen on the website, it immediately recommended I opt into the Premium paid service - I jumped out at that point.

3. VisualCV

VisualCV is an online CV builder that offers a range of templates and customization options. With VisualCV, you can create a professional-looking CV in minutes. VisualCV also offers a range of features, such as a cover letter builder and a LinkedIn integration, to help you create a complete job application package.

This website has a great video to guide your through how to build a CV on there site.

You can download a FREE terrible-looking CV with watermarks all over it or pay to have Visual CV stored. Once you are on a paid plan you can then download a professional looking CV.

4. Resume.com

Resume.com is a free online CV builder offering various templates and customisation options. With Resume.com, you can create a professional-looking CV in minutes. Resume.com also offers a range of features, such as a cover letter builder and a job search tool, to help you with your job search.

NB: You need to sign up for an Indeed account to access your FREE CV. Indeed, is a global job Board primarily. Recruiters can join this to search for CVs.

5. Zety

Zety is a CV builder offering various templates and customisation options. With Zety, you can create a professional-looking CV in minutes. Zety also offers a range of features, such as a cover letter builder and a job search tool, to help you with your job search.

There is a charge to use this product, but you don’t find this out until the end of the process when you have spent time building your CV

6. Grammarly CV Builder - AI Tool

You can use Grammarly to build a CV using their paid AI tool, but I already use Grammarly as a spell checker and for me, that’s all I need from this product.

In conclusion, there are many free CV writing tools available on the web that can help you create a professional and impressive CV.

But is there a more intelligent way for people based here in New Zealand?

Yes, there are free CV writing tools available in New Zealand. One such tool is the CV Builder offered by Careers New Zealand (1). This tool allows users to create a new CV step-by-step for free and provides expert help every step of the way. Another option is the online CV maker offered by Zety, which is also available in New Zealand (2). This tool is designed to help job seekers create a professional-looking CV in a short amount of time.

In addition to these tools, Careers New Zealand also provides a range of CV and cover letter templates that can be downloaded for free (3). These templates are designed to help job seekers create a well-structured and professional-looking CV that highlights their skills and experience.

Overall, there are several free CV writing tools available in New Zealand that can help job seekers create a professional and impressive CV. By using these tools, job seekers can increase their chances of landing their dream job.

MY PERSONAL RECOMMENDATION

Build a LinkedIn Profile it provides a great platform to network and has a FREE CV generator once you have built your profile.

I can provide you with some tips and guidelines on how to create a CV based on your LinkedIn profile.

First, review your LinkedIn profile and identify the key skills, experiences, and achievements that you want to highlight in your CV. Make a list of these items and organize them in a logical and easy-to-read format.

Next, if you don’t like the LinkedIn format when you download a PDF version of your CV then use a CV template to create a basic structure for your CV. There are free CV templates available online that you can use as a starting point. Choose a template that best fits your style and the type of job you are applying for.

Then, use the information from your LinkedIn profile to fill in the sections of your CV. Ensure to include all the relevant information, such as your work experience, education, skills, and achievements. Use bullet points to make your CV easy to read and highlight your accomplishments.

Finally, proofread your CV and make sure it is error-free and easy to read. Ask a friend or colleague to review it for you and provide feedback. I do personally use Grammarly for this task but was not downloaded for this reason alone.

Remember, your CV should be tailored to the specific job you are applying for. Make sure to highlight the skills and experiences that are most relevant to the job and show how you can add value to the company.

Good luck with your job search!
